Zelensky Urges NATO for More Air Defense Systems

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is expected to make air defense a top priority in discussions with NATO leaders after Russia launched one of its most intense waves of missile and drone attacks in recent days. The large-scale strikes caused significant destruction in Kyiv and several other regions, resulting in civilian casualties and widespread damage to residential buildings and public infrastructure.

Speaking ahead of the NATO summit, Zelensky emphasized that Ukraine urgently requires additional air defense systems capable of intercepting ballistic missiles and long-range aerial threats. He argued that stronger defensive capabilities are essential to protect civilians as Russian attacks continue to grow in both frequency and intensity.

According to Ukrainian officials, the latest assault involved a combination of cruise missiles, ballistic missiles, and hundreds of drones launched overnight. While Ukrainian air defense forces successfully intercepted many drones and cruise missiles, officials acknowledged that shortages of advanced interceptor missiles limited their ability to stop ballistic attacks.

The renewed appeal comes as NATO members prepare to discuss long-term security support for Ukraine. Military assistance, defense production, and the supply of modern air defense equipment are expected to be central topics during the alliance's meetings. Several member nations have already expressed continued support for strengthening Ukraine's defensive capabilities amid ongoing Russian aggression.

Zelensky has repeatedly stated that protecting cities, hospitals, schools, and critical energy infrastructure depends on expanding Ukraine's network of advanced air defense systems. Ukrainian officials believe additional interceptor missiles and modern defense platforms would significantly reduce civilian casualties during future attacks.

Security analysts note that Russia has increasingly relied on combined missile-and-drone barrages designed to overwhelm defensive systems. This strategy places growing pressure on Ukraine's limited stockpile of interceptor missiles, making international military assistance more important than ever.

As NATO leaders gather for high-level discussions, Ukraine hopes the alliance will announce new commitments that strengthen the country's air defenses and reinforce broader European security. While diplomatic efforts to end the conflict continue, military support remains a crucial element of Ukraine's strategy to defend its population against ongoing attacks.
